As an overnight stop on the way back to Malaga airport, this is a fantastic way to round off your four-day holiday with photo tuition. The crazy limestone spires are amazing in their own right, and deserve good light and time spent on composing the best image, but for those interested in wildlife,we know of a way to get directly underneath (and sometimes alongside!) the local griffon vulture population’s flight path as they circle the hill. This means you can get some stunning and relatively close-up shots (sometimes very close!) of this local bird-of-prey. Then continue on to the nearby Malaga airport,or return to Lanjaron, perhaps via some further photo locations. (see below)
Near El Torcal –Fuente de Piedra/Lobo Park
There is also an amazing inland lagoon Fuente de Piedra, where flamingoes are regular visitors. This reserve is the only regular breeding colony of Greater Flamingos is Spain, and the second largest in Europe, surpassed only by the population on the Camargue in southern France.
There is also a wolf park nearby, which Kiersten raves about! Either are potential additional options to a visit to El Torcal.
Tabernas Desert
Particularly in spring time, this desert can be stunningly colourful with a sudden display of wildflowers. It’s a few hours drive east of Lanjaron,so best suited either to those leaving from Almeira airport (as an overnight stop on the way back),or as a 2day trip returning to Lanjaron. It’s also the place where many Spaghetti Western films were made!
Walking/winter skills courses
Why not extend your trip with a few days backpacking with professional mountain guides from Spanish Highs in the high mountains? A 3 or 5 day route across the main ridgeline of the Sierra Nevada range (Los Tres Miles – literally “the 3000metres” as the ridgeline rarely drops below this level),is a fantastic (if strenuous) summer objective.
Alternatively in winter conditions, some winter skills tuition might be just the thing to give you the confidence to explore the winter wonderland that snowy mountains create.
