Just back from the Madeira Walking Festival

I’ve been out in Madeira earlier this month –photographing the Madeiran Walking Festival (yep, they let me back in again –last year’s effort obviously wasn’t too bad!).

The weather was a tad more challenging this time –all the skills of Carlos the taxi driver couldn’t get us up the access road of Pico Areeiro when some unexpected snow fell overnight. They actually closed the road later that day –but that didn’t stop local Madeiran folks trying get as far up it as they could to make snowmen!

Snow,it seems,is a sufficiently unusual occurrence even in the mountains to cause great celebration among the Madeiranese (although the receptionist at our hotel was unimpressed with the “low”temperatures –it barely reached 18C on most days outside the highest peaks!)

Anyhow, the first images from the Festival are up on my image gallery. More will come in due course.
